\nI love the idea of multiple learning styles being used to contribute and create knowledge. Tis has been part of teaching art for years. We have naturally differentiated from the beginning. Technology can also part of a truly differentiated education.
\n
\nAt GMS, the computer teacher and the drama teacher both use storytelling as part of their curriculum. The computer teacher stop motion animation with photography to tell stories. The students create their characters and tell a story, or they adapt a story from another source. The drama teacher uses scriptwriting based upon Greek myths to create puppet show that he then films to show future students.
\n
\nI really like the point of using structure so that the students focus on content and organization of the story not just adding images music and other elements. Tis of course has to be modelled by the teacher.
\n
\nI agree that digital storytelling can provide opportunities for students to collaborate over distance and expand learning on national and international levels. This could be a great thing to do when I go back overseas. Students for Gilford and overseas schools can work cooperatively to create stories. These could also be written through google docs or another program that allows students to work together.
\n
\nI like that the students in Hawaii use the content and performance standards and language arts as a structure for their project is very very important. This is why many of these projects should be co-taught with a content area teacher and a technology integration teacher. They both bring their expertise to the table, allowing the projects to develop in both content areas.
\n
\nThe writer makes an interesting point about coaching the students to do their best and assessing them at the end. Interesting concept to use others experts for assessment. Or 8th grade history teacher does Nationa History Day projects with the students, and calls in other teachers to judge them, allowing himself to be taken out of the picture, as he has been coaching them ffrom the beginning of the project. The student should also be taking part in self-assessment.
\n
\nWith the use of digital storytelling in this format we could be raising a whole generation of filmmakers and moviemakers who've learned this at a young age. I really love the connection he often makes about how the real power behind digital storytelling is the knowledge and ability to use new tools to teach the tradition of storytelling. We often talk about how kids no longer sit around a campfire or dining room table and talk. They sit on their handheld devices and don't even relate to each other.
\n
\nDigital storytelling in this format could allow young children and students to create stories that they can share all over the world. It allows them to show what they know, how they are learning, and how to reflect on that learning.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[{"id":"55184178","body":"We are very much on the same page in our thoughts on education and integration. You brought up some key points I found\/find very important with digital storytelling in any form, we need the format to get to a really great story. I also love the collaboration! You truly correct that the goal really is to "share". It really does help students show and reflect on what they have learned. I love that both art and technology are so incorporated in your school system. So important! Thank you for a great summation!","dateCreated":"1340733562","smartDate":"Jun 26, 2012","userCreated":{"username":"shegstrom","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/shegstrom","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}}],"more":0}]}],"more":false},"comments":[]},"http":{"code":200,"status":"OK"},"redirectUrl":null,"javascript":null,"notices":{"warning":[],"error":[],"info":[],"success":[]}}
